Students created a FlipGrid to share which of the 4 careers each student would prefer and why. Students created Light Energy Circle Books to demonstrate their understanding of how light travels in a straight line, reflects, refracts, and can be absorbed. Students also began viewing and answering comprehension questions in Google Classroom using Forms on the following topics: Color, a Light Bulb Debate, Green Lights, Light and Color, Lightning, and Static Electricity.

This week in Science students learned about the components of Sound Energy through reading from our text and answering comprehension questions. Students also viewed PBS learning videos and answered questions in the Google Classroom through Google Forms. I also showed students videos on shattering glass through high pitched volume and playing music through glasses partially filled with water. Students also went outside for 5 minutes and sketched sound waves from all that could be hear outside including rustling wind, birds, people, cars, a leaf blower, etc. The Sound Energy Study Guide is located in Google Classroom. The test will be on Wednesday, October 23rd.

This week in Mr. Marrese's History Class students learned about Leif Erickson and Christopher Columbus. We also learned about the Lost Colony in Roanoke in 1587 where a group of English people disappeared between visits and left a trace carving but were never found. Students then supported 6 possible theories with written evidence and then selected the theory most plausible in their minds. Students will be working in class on their Country Project which is due on Thursday, October 24th. Students may work on it at home if they wish but there will be enough time in class.

This week in Science students created a States of Matter Foldable to demonstrate their knowledge of solids, liquids, and gases. I placed ice cubes on an aluminum block and watched them melt rapidly and placed ice cubes on a plastic foam block and watched them melt slowly. We discussed how metal is a conductor for heat. We watched a segment of Mythbusters in which the cast created Oobleck out of water and corn starch. This non-newtonian fluid acts as both a liquid and a solid. Next, we applied the acronym 'Scream' to recall the various forms of energy before categorizing images under each heading and completing an activity explaining why each segment fit each description. We watched 2 Brainpop videos on Potential and Kinetic Energy before answering comprehension questions. Finally, we made slime!

This week in Mr. Marrese's History Class students practiced latitude and longitude. We watched a Brainpop video and answered comprehension questions on Continents and Oceans. We also practiced learning US States and Capitals. A quizlet review guide is on its way.
This week in Science students practiced writing hypotheses in the Gummy Bear Lab. Students practiced graphing and writing a conclusion in the Colored Crayon Lab after watching a 5-minute video of Mr. Rodgers tour of a crayon factory. Students also used all skills in the Scientific Method in the Colored Dye Lab to see if temperature affected how quickly droplets of yellow and blue dye mixed together to form green. Students submitted and some volunteered to share their Science in a Bag. We also introduced the 3 States of Matter and discussed melting, evaporation, and condensation. Finally, students were presented with the NHL Future Goals interactive media site for the Scientific Method and States of Matter for the following: Preparing the Ice for Air and Ice Temperature, and Designing a Stick for a player in terms of lie, face, and flexibility.

This week in Mr. Marrese's History class students read and answered questions on 9/11. Students also practiced learning States and Capitals, and Major Continents and Oceans.

On a personal note my daughter was accepted to her 1st choice of college from the University of Central Florida's Rosen College of Hospitality. She has always dreamed of working for Walt Disney World. We are very excited for her news as a senior in high school.

This week in Science students learned about Observations, both Qualitative and Quantitative, and Inferences. Students made a list of observations of a person or animal for homework. We discussed what it means to be a scientist in terms of characteristics, inquiry, and discover. These concepts were applied in the Fossil Lab as students made observations and inferences from impressions made into Play-Doh of various objects like coins, bottle caps, legos, golf balls, and molds. Students were later introduced to creating hypotheses based on scenarios like whether the leaves of a tree will change color with water or without water. Finally, the Science In A Bag Assignment was given today and is due on Thursday. Students were given a directions handout, baggie, and index card.

This week in Mr. Marrese's History class students learned facts about the history of the American Flag, viewed a map of the United States, were given a handout with the States and Capitals, filled out a map with all 7 Continents and 5 Oceans, and a Compass Rose. Students were introduced to how to determine Latitude and Longitude and practiced locating cities on a US Map.

Next week is our first 5-day week and it's sure to be a great one!

Have a great weekend!

Well it was so nice to meet our new students this week. Everyone seems excited to be back to begin a new year of learning.

I would like to ask that all forms get filled out this weekend and turned in on Tuesday. This way students can look forward to next week's school work and not back to forms.

Please be sure to sign up for Seesaw. This is how I am going to communicate regularly for this school year. Students were given a sign-up letter on Tuesday. So far I have 12 parents signed up for the year.

This week in Science students learned about observations, the 2 types of observations: qualitative and quantitative, opinions, and inferences. Students then determined whether specific scenarios could be categorized as observations or inferences. Then, students viewed a scene with penguins in the arctic and had to write 3 observations and 2 inferences. Finally, students played the Silent Observation Game.

We will begin History next week!

Thanks,

My name is Mr. Marrese and I am excited to be your Science Teacher this year. I will also be teaching History to my homeroom. This site will be used for weekly updates.

I look forward to a meaningful year and hope to make learning interesting for all students. I look forward to meeting you at the Meet and Greet.

Thanks,

This week in Science we reviewed the Google Classroom Comprehension Questions from the prior week. We played Kahoot to review for the Ecosystems Test. We also created Life Cycle Posters through the aid of online research. On Friday we are conducting experiments with Dissolving Paper, and Diet Coke and Mentos.

This week in Mr. Marrese's History Class I continued reading The Watson's Go To Birmingham - 1963.

If there is a team that can do it, it's the Bruins!

Fingers are crossed for Sunday!
