Update

Hello,

I missed an update last week due to being incredibly busy so here is an update for the past 2 weeks.

In Math students learned how to multiply decimals by powers of ten, whole numbers, and other decimals. Students used expanded form to break down each value and show products in area models. Students spent this week practicing standard computations and word problems. We continue to identify key words to determine the appropriate operations and whether it is a multi-step problem.

In Science students read a Light Energy Packet and summarized each section heading. Students learned what light is, its sources, man-made types, how light behaves, and how light is reflected through our eyes and transmits to our brain so we can see. Its applications in life include the work of a photographer and surgeon, and the creation of fireworks, and laser DVD's. Students saw how light bends through a lab in which students compared the view of a pencil in an empty cup, water-filled cup, and oil-filled cup. The pencil appears to be broken in cups filled with liquid, and thicker in the oil-filled cup. Students then tested various objects for transparency, translucency, and for being opaque when light from a flashlights strikes each object. Light may be reflected, absorbed, and pass through an object completely.

After school help is available Monday and Wednesday afternoon.

Thanks,

Chris
