I missed last week's update so here is an update on the past 2 weeks.
In Science students have completed their 5 essays finally considering all the snow days and have worked on their Solar System Glogs. I will allow a few more days next week in the lab to finish up their Glogs. If students do not complete the Glog in class, they can work on it at home now that they know what they are doing. I will film them for their commercial and post the video on each student's Glog. I would like them to be completed by Friday, March 13th. We will soon be moving onto Rocks and Minerals. Early finishers have been working on JogNog Science to shore up their problem solving skills by completing towers of 4 strands.
In Tenmarks it is Math Madness! This is a nation-wide contest available to all students.
In Math students completed the unit on multiplying and dividing fractions during the prior week. This week students were introduced to order of operations with plenty of enrichment puzzles to solve. Concepts in geometry have been introduced during zone time. Students have been tying in their lessons from the school year with whole year review practice in the following concepts: Place Value, Measurement, Adding, Subtracting, Multiplying, and Dividing Whole Numbers, Decimals, and Fractions. Word Problems have been practiced to help students identify which operation to use and which strategy to take for solving multi-step problems. Students have practiced finding the volume of irregular 3-D figures kind of like 2 different sized boxes stacked upon one another. Math Fact practice and Tangle Tables have been given in class. On Friday we are taking a more hands on approach by having students present fractions of geometric shapes. For instance, students had to find the fractional portion of a triangle in a hexagon. We will be using Geoboards to provide a varied approach. We are hitting it hard this March!
Students will be watching the school play "The Actor Games" Friday morning.
